Somerset County is located in the southern part of the state of Maryland and its county seat is the town of Princess Anne. They have both been affected by the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, as well as the repercussions that are brought on by this problem. This is the kind of issue that should always be taken seriously, because of the damage it can cause. In this county, it has been wreaking havoc for many years now, and it is still present to this day. First of all, let’s look at drug poisoning, as it has led to several fatalities, with a mortality rate for drug overdoses of 25 deaths per 100,000 population for 2016-2018. Alcohol abuse is also something that has caused deaths, as according to County Health Rankings, during the 2014-2018 period, there were 4 alcohol-impaired driving casualties, accounting for 27% of all driving deaths. One problem that may have contributed to some of these deaths is excessive drinking since it can impair a person’s judgment severely. Well, 15% of adults in Somerset County reported either heavy or binge drinking in 2017, which makes it an actively present problem. Now, when a person is struggling with an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, it is essential that they seek help from treatment. For some, an inpatient or residential program may not be the best fit, but thankfully, there is outpatient treatment. This can be extremely beneficial for those who cannot afford to put their life on pause to attend treatment 24/7, as this should not prevent them from getting the help they need. With an outpatient program, they will be able to live at home and fulfilling their responsibilities, but still attend treatment and get the opportunity to recover from their addiction. It does require a higher level of discipline and commitment, but it can still be successful in its purpose.
