Drug and alcohol addiction has become a problem all across the nation, but few states suffer in the same way that South Carolina has. This state has experienced steadily rising substance abuse crisis issues of multiple different kinds, specifically with opiate drugs, alcohol, and marijuana. South Carolina has experienced a difficult trajectory of substance abuse, going for decades with almost no problems at all, and now experiencing some incredibly significant and worrisome problems, to say the least. The key to tackling drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general in South Carolina is with inpatient drug treatment centers, detox facilities, and recovery organizations. Alcohol and Drug Abuse in South Carolina Counties

The different counties in the state of South Carolina have been struggling with some issues that relate to alcohol and drug abuse, and it has caused so much damage to the community. For instance, one of the issues that is affecting many counties is alcohol-impaired driving. Greenville County had 115 deaths caused by this between 2014 and 2018, and Horry County had 90 deaths. Next, there are drug overdoses that have too led to lots of deaths, especially in those two counties. The drug poisoning death rate for 2016-2018 was at 346 deaths per 100,000 population in Greenville County, and 329 for Horry County, according to County Health Rankings. And, finally, the opioid epidemic has been present in the state for several years, and it has caused many deaths. Greenville and Horry counties had 70 and 69 deaths caused by opioid overdoses only in 2017. Now, substances such as opioids can be highly addictive, and they do require comprehensive treatment to overcome this kind of addiction. An opioid abuse treatment will usually start with a medical detox program. Once this first step is done, the person can then address the more psychological side of their addiction and be given the tools to learn how to deal with situations or issues that may have normally contributed to their addiction.

South Carolina Counties’ Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts

A good way for a community to work in reducing substance abuse and the consequences it brings about is with prevention. Within South Carolina, there are many organizations that work toward just that. For example, there is the Laurens County Prevention Coalition, and their main focus when they were formed was to reduce the risk and occurrence of DUI crashes and as we’ve seen earlier, it is definitely present in the state of South Carolina. Next, there is the Drug Free Marlboro Coalition, which is a non-profit organization that is comprised of community leaders who work to address the issues of underage marijuana use and drinking. Although prevention is a very useful tool, some youth may already be suffering with addiction issues. To help them, there are drug treatment programs for youth available, and they can be extremely successful in helping them address and deal with the root causes of their addiction, so they can go on to lead a healthy and drug-free life.
