South Dakota Long-Term Drug Rehab
Long-term substance use treatment is often the most effective and comprehensive form of rehab. Here are a few reasons why:
- Long-term treatment can last anywhere from one to six months, depending on the client’s needs.
- Clients at a long-term program in South Dakota can spend more time building structure and healthy behaviors, habits, and routines.
- They remain at the facility for an adequate period, which significantly increases the rate of success.
- Aftercare programs can be more comprehensive since a sober network was built during treatment.
Getting Help With Substance Use: The Basics
Paying for Treatment in South Dakota
Substance use treatment is the best way to overcome a drug or alcohol addiction problem; however, the cost of treatment can be a massive barrier for some. Medicaid and other forms of health insurance are some of the main ways that treatment is paid for in the state, yet many are still struggling to end their substance use problem. With the increase in the drug crisis, there has also been an increase in drug rehab programs and ways to afford the treatment that is dire to end drug or alcohol addiction.
Paying for Treatment with Medicaid in South Dakota
Medicaid is government-funded health insurance that provides all patients with basic drug and alcohol treatment services. This can include outpatient, medical detoxification, in-patient, and long-term residential programs, among others. The programs covered by the state Medicaid can often experience an influx of patients which can cause a waitlist for treatment if the facility is at capacity for clients. This does not mean that there will be no options available however it can be more challenging in some cases. Medicaid will have the information on which programs will be covered in your area. The state of South Dakota has also approved a Medicaid expansion and it will be effective starting July 2023.
Using Private Insurance to pay for Drug Rehab in South Dakota
With the help of a private health insurance policy, drug users will have access to drug and alcohol treatment centers that can be either partially or fully covered by the insurance provider. Private health insurance providers work with specific drug and alcohol treatment centers to cover treatment. Coverage will depend on the type of policy the individual has and the programs that work directly with the insurance provider. Your health insurance company will be able to inform you on which programs they cover as well as what your anticipated out-of-pocket expenses will be if any. Private health insurance typically works with some of the better drug rehab programs.
According to the South Dakota Health Insurance Marketplace Guide 2023, the following insurers are available in South Dakota:
- Avera
- Sanford
- Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Dakota
Paying for Treatment When Uninsured
Although there are many insurance options available, many residents are uninsured throughout the country and in South Dakota. And while insurance typically offers the most cost-effective solutions for drug rehabilitation services, there are other options for those without health insurance. Self-pay programs do not require patients to have insurance and can usually work with a payment plan for treatment. A sliding scale is another alternative to making treatment more affordable. It is done by utilizing the individual’s income to determine the program’s cost, ensuring that all patients can enroll in affordable drug treatment.

DRS’ Evaluation of South Dakota Drug Rehabs
There are limited substance use treatment options in South Dakota. Most of the programs are private non-profit facilities, and very few are operated at the state level. Our experts recommend contacting the available programs and asking about admission and wait lists. The majority of facilities provide outpatient care, with a handful offering residential and detox services.
On a positive note, almost three-quarters of the facilities accept Medicaid or private health insurance. Roughly half of the programs take state-financed health insurance plans other than Medicaid. In addition, there are numerous options for sliding fee scales and treatment at no charge or minimal payment. We recommend contacting more than one program and asking about payment options. Also, contact your Medicaid offer or health insurance provider to determine what is covered through insurance.
