Substance Abuse Issues of St Lawrence County, NY

First, St Lawrence County has had many drug overdoses that resulted in death between 2015 and 2017, 46 deaths per 100 000 population, according to County Health Rankings. Another issue is the opioid epidemic, as just in 2018, it has caused 5 deaths. This is a lower number than we have seen in other counties, but even just one death caused by an abuse of drugs and/or alcohol is too many. Finally, there is alcohol abuse, more specifically excessive drinking. In 2016, out of those who were surveyed in St Lawrence County, 21% reported heavy or binge drinking. Binge drinking poses a lot of risks to an individual, such as learning or memory problems, violent behavior, high blood pressure, and if it is done by a pregnant woman, there is a possibility of her contracting fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. There are special drug rehab programs for pregnant women, so they can get better and make sure it is done as safely as possible for the baby.

St Lawrence County Sheriff's Office Drug Task Force

The Sheriff's Office of St Lawrence County is dedicated to fighting crime, and that includes drug-related criminal activities. They have a Drug Task Force, which is composed of members of the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement. Their job consists of investigating and arresting those who either deal, sell, transport, and/or profit from the illegal drug industry. They also have other departments that work specifically for road patrolling, criminal investigations, etc. But, we can definitely see that the use or sale of illicit substances is something that concerns them.

Prevention Programs for Substance Abuse in St Lawrence County, NY

There are a few prevention programs specifically for substance abuse within the county, and we will look at them individually. First, there is the St. Lawrence County Partners 4 Substance Use Prevention, which is made up of community members who wish to have a safe neighborhood that is free from the abuse and addiction to drugs. They hold monthly meetings for anyone who wishes to get involved and join them in their fight. Then, we have the Seaway Valley Prevention Council, which was put in place to inform the community on substance abuse and to increase their awareness of the consequences of it. Their programs and services are mostly for youth and their families, so they can help them lead healthy lives without having to deal with substance abuse.
