If you are caught in possession of illicitly obtained anabolic steroids, it carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine. The maximum penalty for trafficking steroids is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The long-term use of steroids causes long-lasting changes in the person’s neurotransmitter pathways within the brain. If someone has taken steroids for a couple of weeks and then stops, there is a decreased ability to respond to physical stress. The adrenal glands within the body will not react normally, and this effect could last up to a year in some circumstances. Most of the damage done by steroids is reversible if the person stops taking them and does not start again.
