Steuben County is definitely dealing with a problem relating to substance abuse. It ranges from alcohol and drug abuse, including overdoses, to the opioid epidemic, and all these issues have caused a great deal of damage throughout the county. But, there are also a lot of substance abuse treatment services and programs and drug detox programs offered to the county’s residents, so that anyone who needs it can get help for a problem with alcohol and/or drug abuse and addiction.

Problems with Substance Abuse in Steuben County, NY

In Steuben County, there are many problems with substance abuse that cannot be overlooked and should be dealt with. First, there is the opioid epidemic that has created a lot of harm in the community. In 2018, there were 10 hospitalizations, 27 emergency department visits, and 5 deaths per 100 000 population in Steuben County. And, if we look at alcohol abuse, the county has suffered from driving deaths, especially those caused by drunk drivers. Between 2013 and 2017, there were 44 driving deaths, and 8 of those were caused by alcohol-impaired driving, which amounts to 18% of all driving deaths within those years, according to County Health Rankings. Then, there is the issue of drug overdoses resulting in deaths. Between 2015 and 2017, there were 41 deaths caused by drug overdoses per 100 000 population in the county. This all shows us that the substance abuse issue is surely present in Steuben County.

Steuben County’s Programs to Fight Alcohol and Drug Abuse

In order to battle this issue hands-on, the county has put in place many programs and services to either prevent substance abuse or help enforce the law regarding the abuse of illicit drugs. For example, the Drug Task Force of Steuben County provides a Crime/Drug Tip Hotline available to residents, so they can call in and report illicit drug activities. The website gives tips on what type of activity is considered suspicious and what information to leave when calling the hotline. There is also the STOP-DWI Program provided by the Sheriff’s Office of Steuben County, where those convicted of drunk driving can learn from their mistakes, through four main components; enforcement, adjudication, rehabilitation, and public education and information. Finally, there is the Steuben Prevention Coalition, whose aims are to put in place a plan that will help reduce the use of alcohol and drugs by youth, reduce risk factors of substance abuse, etc. by providing prevention information for both teens and their parents, so that they can all have the tools to avoid falling in the trap of substance abuse.
