To be precise, drug overdoses have caused 70 deaths between 2015 and 2017 per 100 000 population, according to County Health Rankings. As for alcohol abuse, the county definitely has a problem with excessive drinking, in that of those surveyed in 2016, 18% of them reported heavy or binge drinking. And, lastly, another issue that is ravaging through Sullivan County is the opioid epidemic. It has caused damage in many ways and still does to this day. In 2018, there were 46 emergency department visits, 10 hospitalizations, and 30 deaths per 100 000 population, all caused by opioid overdoses.
Prevention Programs for Substance Abuse in Sullivan County, NY
The statistics shown above are highly distressing. But, throughout Sullivan County, there are several programs for the prevention of alcohol & drug abuse. For example, there is the Sullivan County Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, which was put in place in 2012 and whose goals are to reduce the number of deaths related to opioid overdoses in the county and to do so by providing education and prevention services throughout the community. Sullivan County also provides information on the different locations for pharmaceutical drug drop-off boxes, so that those who have unused or expired medications in their possession can get rid of them safely.
