Drug and alcohol addiction is a problem everywhere, including in Texas. While Texas has some very strict laws on the subject of substance abuse that make it very, very difficult to abuse drugs there, the state hits national records for alcohol abuse. In fact, alcohol abuse is one of the biggest problems in Texas and has been for some time. Furthermore, this state also suffers a lot with illegally trafficked drugs that come into the state from Mexico. The best way to tackle addiction is with inpatient, outpatient, drug and alcohol treatment centers, detox facilities, and recovery organizations.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Issues in Texas Counties

The problems associated with alcohol and other drug abuse in Texas have greatly affected the community. Some counties in the state are suffering from it more than others, which is what we will see with the following statistics. First, when it comes to alcohol-impaired driving and the deaths it has caused, the top 3 counties with the highest number of deaths were Harris County, Dallas County, and Bexar County, with 760, 439, and 287 deaths respectively between 2014 and 2018. Additionally, the opioid epidemic led to lots of deaths in Texas counties, and the most affected were Harris, Dallas, and Tarrant County, and they respectively had 282, 170, 107 deaths for 2017. And, in the state of Texas as a whole, opioids caused 1,402 deaths in 2018, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). And of those fatalities, 350 involved synthetic opioids other than methadone, such as fentanyl and its analogs, 668 involved heroin, and 547 involved prescription opioids. On a more positive note, Texas is in the top three of the lowest percentage of teenage drug users, and adult drug users. It is also one of the five states with fewer overdose deaths per capita. These are all issues that can be addressed with proper substance abuse treatment, which can include inpatient treatment, outpatient programs, and can sometimes start with a detox process.

In order to help combat the problems that were just mentioned, there are some organizations with programs for the prevention of substance abuse. For instance, there is Drug-Free Texas, which is a prevention campaign to reduce the use of alcohol and drugs by youth in the state. They provide information not only on the dangers of these substances but also on healthy alternatives. Then, there is Drug Prevention Resources (DPR), and it is a non-profit organization that also focuses on prevention and does that with school-based programs to directly provide youth with the tools to lead healthy lives, as well as community-based initiatives that help parents and families feel empowered, so they can protect their children. Next, there is the Blanco CoAPT, which started in 2014, and their goals are to make the community more aware of drug use and to make them collaborate more in prevention so as to decrease substance use and abuse in the state’s youth. Finally, there is The Coalition, and it is a non-profit that is made up of citizens and parents who are concerned and wish to keep youth in Texas away from drugs. All of these organizations, as well as the different treatment services available for substance abuse, are very helpful in the creation of a drug-free environment in the state of Texas.
