Transitional housing in South Dakota is temporary supportive housing programs and does help a variety of people. For example, individuals and families who are homeless, veterans, homeless teens and young adults, working homeless, and refugees. The purpose of a transition home is to bridge the gap between living in a shelter and finding more permanent housing. Typically, the transition homes in South Dakota are operating in areas where the need is high, and where this is access to affordable housing. Transition homes cannot necessarily work without being attached to affordable housing. Substance abuse can lead to homelessness, and many transitional homes can offer basic supportive counseling and support for people struggling with substance abuse or other mental health problems. This type of support can possibly include life skills training, and education and training. Transitional homes can be operated by religious groups and organization, and or non-profit groups.
