New York TRICARE Health Insurance Plans for Substance Use
TRICARE health insurance offers different resources for those who are covered, such as uniformed service members, retirees, and their families. The emergency inpatient hospital services cover the person for the immediate hospital admission. When substance use is the reason for admission, the policy includes the detox process, stabilization, and addressing any medical complications because of the addiction. Intensive outpatient programs covered by TRICARE are for patients who do not need to be in a hospital. The care helps them stabilize, reduce addiction symptoms, and prevent relapse. Outpatient treatment is excellent for addicts transitioning into residential care or for aftercare treatment. TRICARE also covers the management of withdrawal symptoms, and medication-assisted treatment, along with opioid treatment programs.
According to Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, and Research Efforts in the Military by Congressional Research Service, service members may receive treatment for substance use. The rehabilitation is offered through the Military Treatment Facility or through TRICARE, which contracts civilian health care providers. Per TRICARE, only medically necessary and evidence-based therapies and interventions are covered by the insurance policy. The assessment process for a substance use addiction can be self-initiated or referred by a supervisor, co-worker, or family member. The health care providers at the Military Treatment Facility will only notify a supervisor of the problem if it involves self-harm, harm to others, harm to the mission, and designated personnel. Typically, everything is kept confidential and private to avoid the stigma attached to being addicted to drugs or alcohol.
