Isle of Wight County has been greatly impacted by drug and alcohol abuse as has the majority of the state of Virginia. This problem has devastating consequences that come with it, and they have caused an important amount of damage within the community. The following statistics will prove to us that this is not an issue that can be overlooked and that it should actually be taken very seriously. For instance, if we look at excessive drinking, we can see that in 2017, it was reported by nearly one-fifth of the county's adult population, 18% to be more precise. Alcohol abuse in turn caused casualties, with 8 lives lost to alcohol-impaired driving, accounting for 36% of the 22 driving deaths for this period. But on a broader level, drug poisoning also led to fatalities, as for 2016-2018, the drug overdose mortality rate was of 22 deaths per 100,000 population, according to County Health Rankings. We can now see that the substance abuse problem is definitely present in Isle of Wight County, and treatment resources are undoubtedly needed for those who need it. Anyone can be affected by such an issue, including those who help fight it every day; law enforcement officers & other first responders. These individuals deserve to get the help they need should they suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction.
