Isle of Wight County has been greatly impacted by drug and alcohol abuse as has the majority of the state of Virginia. Alcohol abuse in turn caused casualties, with 8 lives lost to alcohol-impaired driving, accounting for 36% of the 22 driving deaths for this period. But on a broader level, drug poisoning also led to fatalities, as for 2016-2018, the drug overdose mortality rate was of 22 deaths per 100,000 population, according to County Health Rankings. We can now see that the substance abuse problem is definitely present in Isle of Wight County, and treatment resources are undoubtedly needed for those who need it. Anyone can be affected by such an issue, including those who help fight it every day; law enforcement officers & other first responders. They deal with extremely stressful and high-pressure situations daily, which can take quite a toll on someone.
