Union County's Issues with Substance Abuse

First, let's look at the issue of drug overdoses, more specifically those who have resulted in deaths. Between 2015 and 2017, there were 84 deaths caused by drug overdoses per 100 000 population. But, this is only one part of the problem. There are also the problems brought on by the opioid epidemic. For example, if we considered all the opioid pills circulating through Union County in 2016 and divided the total amount by the number of residents, it would result in 47.2 pills per resident. This is in the lower numbers if we look at other counties in North Carolina, but it is still definitely concerning. In addition to that, between 2013 and 2017, there were 8.6 opiate poisonings resulting in death per 100 000 population, according to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM).

DWI Treatment Court of Union County, NC

In Union County, there is a DWI Treatment Court, which was put in place in 2010. This program focuses mostly on those who have repeat offenses of driving while impaired. Its goal is to protect the safety of the public. It addresses alcoholism and drug abuse directly and holds the offender accountable for his action, while also mandating him to attend long-term treatment, with alcohol and drug screenings, case management, etc. They are also required to go to court twice a week, so their progress can be monitored regularly. This provides these people a chance to fully recover from their substance abuse problem, so they can live a healthy and responsible life. The use of this drug court has shown a lower rate of recidivism, which makes the whole community a safer place.
