Virginia’s Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Now, treatment is extremely important, because it helps someone who is addicted to overcome that with a treatment program, and most even offer aftercare services to ensure that the person sticks to their recovery. But, prevention is also an essential part of reducing substance abuse within an area, and Virginia has many organizations and programs that help with that. For instance, there is the Appalachian Substance Abuse Coalition, and their focus is informing the community and engaging them so they can understand the substance abuse epidemic in the state, and address it accordingly. They work on many different projects, but they are all done with the vision of having a safe and drug-free community in SW Virginia. Then, there is the Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition, and its goals are similar to those of the previous coalition, and it is comprised of organizations that work in law enforcement, health care, youth advocacy, etc. One of the things they offer on their website is warning signs for members of the community so that if their loved one is suffering from addiction, they can know what to look for and how to help them.
