Out of the many problems with substance abuse in Warren County, we will first look at drug overdoses. Overdoses can unfortunately happen often when one is misusing or abusing a substance, and when an overdose is not taken care of immediately and appropriately, it can sadly lead to death. Between 2015 and 2017, there were 19 deaths caused by drug overdoses per 100 000 population in Warren County, according to County Health Rankings. As for the next issue, alcohol abuse, they are a few things to look over. Concerning excessive drinking, in 2016, 22% of all those surveyed in the county have reported heavy or binge drinking. And drinking can cause a great deal of damage if one decides to get behind the wheel while he is intoxicated. Between 2013 and 2017, there were 3 deaths caused by alcohol-impaired driving, which accounts for 12% of all driving deaths in Warren County within those years. The opioid epidemic has also ravaged throughout the county mercilessly, and just in 2018, there were 20 emergency department visits, 9 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths per 100 000 population, all caused by opioid overdoses.

Warren County’s Council for Prevention

In Warren County, the Council for Prevention has done a lot to help in the fight against substance abuse. They wish to encourage leaders, members of the community, professionals, and others to collaborate with each other to address the different issues relating to substance abuse, treatment, and recovery. They have a program called the Warren County Youth Court, and it provides youth between 10 and 18 years old who have committed an offense or crime an alternative to the criminal justice system. It was put in place to help reduce the incidence of these crimes and negative behaviors. It teaches the youth to take responsibility for their actions and their consequences. There is also the Opioid Diversion Program, which is a treatment program for those criminal or civil charges that are either current or pending and relating to the use of opioids. It provides them an opportunity to seek treatment and get the help they need instead of serving jail time.
