Watkins Glen is a village that lies within the towns of Dix and Reading. The town is the county seat for Schuyler County and the town has a population of over 2,000 people. The median age in the village is around 39 and the rate of poverty is about 19%. Much of the economy in Watkins Glen is accommodation and food service, health care, mining, quarrying, and oil, and gas extraction. According to a Community Health Assessment (CHA) for Schuyler County in 2013, the median household income in the county is below the state average. Approximately 9% of people within the county had incomes below the poverty line, which was lower than the New York State average. Many people who are struggling with poverty resort to drugs or alcohol as a means to cope. However, this essentially brings a person deeper into poverty, making it more challenging to get out. Poverty also impacts how someone can get the proper health insurance they need. According to the report mentioned above, 14% of the residents in the county under the age of 65 were uninsured at the time of this report. Substance abuse treatment programs in the county work with insurance providers. Health insurance helps alleviate some of the financial burdens for a drug rehab program. There are countless reasons why someone chooses to abuse drugs or alcohol. Rehabilitation and or treatment is the only solution to help someone overcome his or her addiction.
