Prescription Drugs Rehabs & Detox by States

What Are the Most Commonly Abused Prescription Drugs?

Prescription drugs are widely abused throughout the United States.  Per the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 2017, roughly 18 million Americans misused prescription drugs once that year.  There are numerous commonly abused prescription drugs.  Depressants such as barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and sleep medications.  This can include brands such as Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Ambien, and Librium.  These drugs cause sedation, lowered inhibitions, slurred speech confusion, respiratory distress, and many other issues.  These types of drugs are abused as a prescription but can also be found and bought illegally.  Many of the abuse problems start with a prescription being misused.

There are also opioids and morphine derivatives that are commonly abused.  This includes codeine, morphine, methadone, and fentanyl.  Within this category will also be oxycodone, hydrocodone, Oxymorphone, meperidine, and propoxyphene.  Prescription opioids are used to treat the pain of varying degrees but are regularly abused.  Opioid abuse is a big problem throughout the United States.  Many of the overdose deaths occurring involve opioids and benzodiazepines.  These two drugs are often prescribed at the same time for different conditions.  Opioids cause euphoria, drowsiness, sedation, weakness, nausea, and can increase blood pressure and slow down breathing.

There is also the category of stimulants and other narcotic compounds, which can be abused.  Amphetamines such as Dexedrine and Adderall are often misused.  This also includes methylphenidate, such as Ritalin, which was often coined as kiddie cocaine.  When these drugs are abused they are typically combined with depressants as a pick-me-up.  They will create feelings of exhilaration, increased energy, high blood pressure, reduced appetite, weight loss, and insomnia.  There are endless health complications connected to the abuse of any of these drug categories.  Prescription drug addiction does require extensive treatment.  Rehabilitation programs throughout the country treat varying degrees of prescription drug addiction.
