How can wilderness programs be beneficial?

There are many aspects of outdoor therapy that can be beneficial to someone struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. Nature can be a very soothing environment, that can certainly help a lot of people simply by taking them out of their often stressful environment. With activities such as rock climbing, camping and survival skills challenges, addicts go through self-discovery and can become more productive and skilled. This can put them in the right frame of mind to start addressing the issues linked to their addiction as well as those underlying it.

How does wilderness therapy work with substance abuse?

This type of program is a very specialized type of treatment for substance abuse and mental-health problems, and all of it takes place within the outdoors. Patients can become reconnected to the wilderness again, and learn new and valuable skills that can help them maintain his or her sobriety. Much of the program involves the patients spending his or her time outdoors, work through challenges, character building, along with group and individual counseling. All of this combined helps a patient work through moderate and or severe addictions, and addresses the underlying issues fueling the addiction.
