Substance abuse has been affecting Wise County and its county seat, Wise, for many years now, and it has caused an important amount of damage in this community. Drug and alcohol abuse should always be taken seriously, as this kind of problem can escalate very quickly. We will be looking at some statistics that will help us truly understand the problem. Firstly, we have binge and heavy drinking, which are combined into excessive drinking, which was reported by 17% of the county’s adult population in 2017. Since this drinking pattern may severely impair a person’s ability to make good decisions, and one of these bad decisions might be to get behind the wheel. This can lead to devastation, and actually, in Wise County, alcohol-impaired driving caused 4 deaths, accounting for 15% of all driving-related casualties, according to County Health Rankings. Alcohol is not the only substance that led to fatalities though, as the drug overdose mortality rate for 2016-2018 was of 46 deaths per 100,000. To help bring these numbers down, treatment is essential, as this is the most effective way for someone to overcome an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. For some women, being around men during their treatment may not be the best option. They may not be comfortable around men, which can hinder their recovery process. Thankfully, there are treatment programs for women only available, and these can provide them with an environment in which they can feel as comfortable as possible and focus only on their recovery. Being around other women that are struggling with similar issues can be extremely beneficial for them. Additionally, there are also treatment programs for men only, for the same reasons, which can be equally helpful.
