In 2018, Yates County was not significantly impacted by heroin and pain medication abuse. Per the New York State Department of Health, there were no heroin-related overdoses in 2018 and three opioid pain medication overdose deaths. However, there were 21 outpatient emergency department visits due to heroin use. It is not uncommon for many pain medication addicts to use heroin because it is cheaper and easier to buy than pain medication. Most of the state has been flooded with heroin due to recent changes in prescribing opioids. There are many substance abuse prevention programs in Yates County. For example, there are several Drug Drop Box locations throughout the county, where individuals can drop off their unused, unwanted or expired medications, so they do not end up in the wrong hands. There was also a new app for smartphones that was created and launched by the Sheriff's Department of Yates County, which allows residents of the community to send crime or drug tips anonymously on their phones, which are then sent directly to law enforcement.
