Frequently Asked Questions
Opioid addiction is a serious condition that can quickly lead to physical dependence, intense cravings, and life-threatening complications. Continued use increases the risk of overdose, which can slow or stop breathing and result in death, as well as other health issues and long-term impacts on daily life. Seeking professional treatment is important because it helps address both the physical and behavioral aspects of addiction, providing medical support, therapies, and monitoring to reduce risks and improve the chances of lasting recovery.
Opioid withdrawal symptoms occur when someone dependent on opioids stops using them, causing the body to react to their absence. These symptoms often resemble a severe flu and can include anxiety, muscle aches, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, and intense cravings, making the experience highly uncomfortable and a major barrier to stopping use.
Prescription opioids are legally prescribed pain medications that bind to opioid receptors to reduce pain and can produce relaxation or euphoria. Although they are effective for moderate‑to‑severe pain, repeated use, even as directed, can lead to tolerance, physical dependence, and in some cases addiction, where a person compulsively uses the drug despite harm. The risk of addiction increases with longer use, higher doses, and personal or family history of substance use disorders.
Treatment for opioid addiction typically involves evidence‑based strategies that address both the physical and behavioral aspects of the disorder. Medication‑assisted treatment (MAT) uses FDA‑approved medicines like buprenorphine or naltrexone to reduce cravings, stabilize brain chemistry, and support long‑term recovery. Counseling and behavioral therapies help modify drug‑related behaviors, improve coping skills, and support engagement in recovery. A comprehensive plan often combines medications with psychosocial support tailored to individual needs. It should be noted that ideally, the person is drug free at the end of treatment, whether from opioids or any MAT medication.
