Frequently Asked Questions

Should you seek treatment in Deschutes County, or look further away?

Deschutes County sits in central Oregon with the Cascades between it and the Willamette Valley, and that geography matters. For someone who needs longer-term care, including programs that keep young children with the parent, there is nothing local. The realistic options are ninety to over a hundred miles west in the Eugene and Corvallis area. That is a real trip, so plan it, do not improvise it. There is a local long-term faith-based program option. Local programs do not provide medical withdrawal care, so for alcohol or benzos a local hospital emergency department is the first step, since those are dangerous to stop alone. Locally there is solid counseling and sober housing. Use the local counseling and the long-term programs. But if someone needs a longer-term program bed, plan the ninety-mile trip over the Cascades. That drive west is the only way he gets the care this county does not have.
